Why Businesses Should Consider Solar
Owning Is Better Than Renting
Everyone of us has heard this throughout our teens and some into our twenties: it’s better to be investing in your own property than throwing money away each month on rent. That same principle can be applied to energy. When you are getting energy from a power company, you are paying each month for them to provide a service that you never see any returns on, and when you move and sell your home, all that money spent on energy bills is gone, never to be seen again.
Another added benefit of adding solar panels, is increased property value. If you own the building your business operates out of, you have the opportunity to build equity on that property investment through the addition of these panels. When the time comes to upgrade and sell that building, the money you spent on your solar system adds to the resale value of your building.
TAX CREDITS MAKE YOUR ACCOUNTANT (AND YOUR BOTTOM LINE) HAPPY
The government is offering an extension on their 26% tax credit. This tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the income that you are reporting to the government that is filed at tax time rather than a discount given at the time of the project. If you would like to learn more about the Solar Investment Tax Credit, you can read about it here.
This extension is only going to last at the 26% rate until the end of 2022. By choosing to make this change now rather than later, you are removing some of the monetary risk from your investment. It also allows you to start reaping the benefits of having a fully-paid off system sooner. Additionally, because the system experiences rapid depreciation, when you count that, and the 26% credit, you are only paying for a little over 50% of the system. And, each year it earns a return of 5 – 7%.
