Starter Energy Plans

The solar industry is evolving quickly. Increasing energy demand, new data center development, and rising electricity costs are transforming how energy is produced and consumed. Based on nearly five decades of experience designing high-performance homes and analyzing energy use, Stitt Solar has developed three starter solar plans. These plans are designed to make solar more accessible and practical for homeowners who want to take action and begin generating their own energy.

A new way to go solar: baseload

For many years, the traditional approach to solar was to design systems that offset 100% of a home’s energy use. While that strategy worked well under past incentives and policies, today’s energy landscape is changing.

With the absence of the federal tax credit, less favorable net metering policies, and recent electricity rate increases, including a 22% rate increase from one electric provider, many homeowners are beginning to question how they will manage rising energy costs in the future.

Solar energy has always been an alternative source of power. Under today’s conditions, it is also becoming one of the most reliable and cost-effective ways to produce energy compared to relying entirely on the traditional power grid.

With nearly five decades of experience in energy efficiency and high-performance homes, we began looking for new ways to offer more flexible energy options for our community. That’s how the idea of Starter Energy Plans was born.

Instead of requiring a full solar system from the start, these plans focus on covering what is known as a home’s “baseload” energy—the minimum level of electricity a home consistently uses every day.

By starting with this essential energy use, homeowners can take a smarter first step into solar, lowering energy costs while keeping the option to expand their system in the future.

Start Small. Gain Energy Independence

Installing a small solar system designed to cover a home’s baseload energy—the electricity used by essential appliances such as your refrigerator, security system, Wi-Fi, and other everyday devices—is a practical first step toward energy independence. By generating this portion of your electricity, you begin protecting your home from volatile and rising energy costs.

Once homeowners experience the financial benefits of producing their own power, many choose to expand their systems over time. Additional solar panels and battery storage can be added later to cover more of the home’s energy needs and increase resilience

Solar's New Economics

The economics behind starting with a smaller system are simple: the monthly cost of the solar system is often close to the savings you see on your electric bill. This allows homeowners to begin generating their own energy without a large upfront investment.

As electricity prices continue to rise, producing your own clean energy can also become more affordable than buying power from the grid. Based on our preliminary calculations, the average electricity cost from the grid is around 15¢ per kWh, while energy produced with solar can be closer to 13¢ per kWh.
